Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued an investigative subpoena to Dr. Anthony Fauci as part of a state inquiry into pandemic guidance, financial incentives, grants, and professional opportunities that impacted Florida businesses and residents.
The subpoena requires Fauci to produce records covering the period from January 3, 2020, to the present day. The deadline for document production is August 31, 2026.
According to state officials, the investigation focuses on whether federal COVID-19 guidance coincided with personal or professional financial gain.
“Government officials have a certain level of immunity in their official capacities, but if Fauci personally profited off of the ‘guidance’ he issued, that very well could have broken Florida law,” Uthmeier said in a statement. “Fauci’s diary focused more on self-promotion than the legitimate safety concerns from the mRNA vaccines. While Fauci was pushing for book deals, awards, and fortune and fame, Floridians were being deceived and harmed by his misrepresentations.”
Attorneys general from West Virginia and Louisiana are backing Florida’s action.
“Dr. Fauci’s recent refusal to answer Congress’s questions about his actions during the pandemic is concerning,” said West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey. “The American people deserve to know if they or their elected leaders were misled or manipulated. Both my Office and I support Attorney General Uthmeier’s efforts to uncover the truth.”
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill also weighed in on the investigation.
“The public deserves answers to about a million questions related to the pandemic, its origins, and the government’s actions in response,” Murrill said. “What we know already is Fauci lied—we just don’t know yet how much. But he lied about something as basic as keeping a diary. The truth will come out.”
State officials said the decision to issue the subpoena follows the public release of diary entries attributed to Fauci by U.S. Senator Rand Paul. The records detailed financial awards, research grants, and commercial offers during Fauci’s tenure as a key federal health official.
Among the specific items listed in the subpoena is an approximately $900,000 award received from the Dan David Foundation in 2021, including the application materials, rationale, and related communications. Investigators are also seeking documentation surrounding a 2022 National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) grant awarded to the University of Florida Scripps Biomedical Research program.
The document demand extends to communications regarding book contracts—including negotiations with Penguin Random House—named professorships, board seats, literary agents, and private foundation partnerships.
Additionally, the state is requesting all correspondence with Florida businesses, media outlets, and local communities regarding public health directives such as mask requirements, business and school closures, social distancing, and vaccine deployment.
The subpoena further asks for records on vaccine efficacy, natural immunity, booster strategies, and safety messaging concerning potential side effects like myocarditis.
