A new study highlighted that Florida has the highest concentration of adults eager to learn the English language nationwide.
The research by the e-learning platform eLearning Industry analyzed English language acquisition rates across U.S. states from 2019 to 2021. It examined adult English language acquisition data for individuals 18 and older, calculating the average number of learners per 100,000 residents. The states were ranked from highest to lowest concentration of English language learning, with higher rates indicating greater focus on English language acquisition.
Florida leads with 362 English language learners per 100,000 residents, representing a 266% increase over the national average of 99. The Sunshine State has an average adult population of 17,163,723 and an average of 62,189 adults engaged in English language acquisition annually. Florida experienced its highest English language acquisition in 2019 with 70,596 learners and its lowest in 2020 with 45,864 learners.
Looking at the study, a spokesperson from eLearning Industry commented:
“The research reveals that Florida is an exemplary model of English language learning commitment, demonstrating the highest concentrations of adult English language acquisition programs, creating strong foundations for immigrant integration and workforce development.
“The data further suggests that high English language learning rates tend to create more inclusive communities that improve economic opportunities and prepare diverse populations for academic and professional success.
“To improve English language acquisition in other states, educational systems should prioritize adult ESL programs, promote community-based language learning initiatives, and ensure adequate resources to support non-native English speakers in their language learning journey.”
