Florida-Based Spirit Airlines Grounds All Flights Overnight: You’re Stranded, Now What?

The distinctive yellow planes of Spirit Airlines will no longer be seen in the skies as of Saturday morning. The Florida-based carrier abruptly ceased all operations on May 2, 2026, after a final attempt at a government bailout collapsed. The move has left thousands of travelers and airline crew members stranded at airports across the country with no immediate way home.

In a statement posted to its website, the airline confirmed an immediate and orderly wind-down of all business.

“To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available,” the company stated. Spirit leadership expressed pride in their 34-year history as an ultra-low-cost pioneer but noted that the airline could no longer sustain its operations.

The shutdown follows two years of financial instability, including two bankruptcy filings and a failed merger with JetBlue. Skyrocketing jet fuel prices, driven by ongoing conflict in the Middle East, ultimately derailed a potential deal with the Trump administration and company creditors.

Passengers currently holding tickets are being told not to go to the airport. For those seeking money back, the path to a refund depends entirely on the original payment method.

Travelers who used credit or debit cards can initiate refund requests through the Spirit website or by contacting their banks to dispute the charges for services not rendered.

However, those who used travel vouchers or “Free Spirit” loyalty points face a much more difficult road, as those claims will now be handled through a lengthy bankruptcy court process.

In response to the sudden vacuum in the travel market, several major airlines have stepped in with “rescue fares” to assist displaced passengers. JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares through May 6 for those who can show a valid Spirit itinerary.

American Airlines has announced special pricing on overlapping nonstop routes and is considering using larger aircraft to increase seating capacity.

Frontier Airlines is providing discounts of up to 50% on base fares with the promo code SAVENOW, while Southwest Airlines has implemented a mileage-based pricing structure ranging from $200 to $400 for affected travelers.

The closure comes just hours after President Donald Trump indicated that a federal rescue was unlikely unless the terms significantly improved.

“We’re looking at Spirit. If we can help them, we will, but we have to come first,” the President told reporters Friday. Ultimately, opposition from some Republican lawmakers and disagreement among creditors regarding the terms of a 90% government stake in the company led to the final breakdown in negotiations.

Spirit has clarified that it will not be responsible for incidental costs, such as emergency hotel stays or new tickets on other airlines, leaving passengers to rely on travel insurance or the goodwill of competing carriers.
