Sunbathers at Martin County beaches had more than just the tide to watch out for last week as detectives quietly trailed a suspect accused of targeting parked cars across the shoreline. The surveillance operation, a joint effort between the Martin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (CID) and St. Lucie County detectives, ended with the arrest of 32-year-old Joseph Zeman of Fort Pierce.
Investigators began tracking Zeman as he moved between Martin and St. Lucie County beaches, allegedly cruising through parking lots to scout for vulnerable vehicles.
According to reports from the Sheriff’s Office, detectives observed Zeman checking multiple cars and attempting to open doors. While some vehicles were left unlocked and easily accessible, others remained secure simply because the owners had locked their doors.

The “beach-hopping” spree concluded when law enforcement moved in to take Zeman into custody. He now faces multiple charges, including both attempted and confirmed vehicle burglaries.
Because the activity spanned multiple jurisdictions, Zeman is also charged with traveling across county lines to commit a felony.
Reflecting on the arrest, officials noted the suspect’s luck finally ran out, remarking that he had “Fun Fun Fun until daddy took the jail-bird away.”
