A Florida caregiver is facing a charge of elder neglect after sheriff’s deputies found an 81-year-old dementia patient living in a tent outside her home.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Karie Lynn Lightfoot, 53, on Saturday. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, investigators with the Department of Children and Families discovered the victim outside an Ocala, Florida home on June 3.
The victim, who experiences dementia and mobility issues, told authorities that Lightfoot placed her in the tent. The affidavit states the tent was located far from the house, preventing the woman from getting inside the residence.
While the tent contained a mattress and small appliances, the victim had limited food and water. The report also notes that Lightfoot provided the victim with adult diapers but told her she would have to change herself. Investigators estimate the woman had been living in the tent for approximately one week.
The victim’s son, who was traveling outside the country for work, told law enforcement that Lightfoot had cared for his mother for about two years. Investigators allege that Lightfoot grew tired of her caregiving responsibilities and moved to Texas without securing alternative care for the victim.
During the period she was left outside, the victim suffered a fall. Deputies transported her to a local hospital for medical treatment. According to the affidavit, she is expected to transition into a nursing home upon her discharge from the hospital.
Following her arrest, Lightfoot was booked into the Marion County Jail. She has since posted a $2,000 bond. A future court date has not yet been scheduled.
