Florida Cold Case Solved: Life Sentence For Father’s 2015 Murder

The decade-old murder case of South Florida father Renaldo Clayton has finally been closed, bringing justice following the conviction and life sentencing of the man responsible for his death.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit announced Friday that the 2015 murder case was solved after Timothy Thomas III accepted a plea deal on Thursday. Appearing before Judge Michelle Delancy, Thomas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Clayton was tragically shot and killed in an “execution-style” manner inside his Florida City home on October 19, 2015. Heartbreakingly, he had been seen just hours before, playing T-ball with his then-three-year-old son in the front yard.

Family members described how the assailant appeared to have ambushed Clayton, waiting for him to return home just before 10 p.m., following him inside, and shooting him first in the mouth and then the head. Despite an extensive initial investigation by police, the case eventually went cold.

The breakthrough in the case came with the identification of Thomas, who was already serving a life sentence for attempted murder. Just four days after Clayton’s murder, Thomas shot a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop in the Florida Keys.

New evidence later emerged that linked Thomas to the 2015 homicide. Investigators discovered that nine 9mm casings found next to Clayton’s body had a definitive match with the casings recovered from the scene of the deputy shooting.

This ballistics evidence, combined with evidence found on a phone belonging to Thomas, provided the connection needed for Miami-Dade homicide investigators to charge him.

Thomas, who also faces charges in a separate 2010 cold case murder of a Gainesville boy, was extradited to Miami-Dade County earlier this year to face the charge of second-degree murder in Clayton’s case, culminating in his conviction and life sentence this week.
