Governor Ron DeSantis traveled to North Florida today to unveil a bronze tribute to James Madison, marking a final milestone in a statewide project to honor America’s Founding Fathers. The dedication of the new statue coincides with the lead-up to the nation’s 250th anniversary and officially completes Florida’s initiative to place monuments in every namesake county throughout the state.
The monument celebrates the man widely regarded as the “Father of the Constitution.” While Madison did not fight on the front lines of the American Revolution, his intellectual contributions shaped the very framework of the United States government.
As the primary author of the Virginia Plan and a key contributor to the Federalist Papers, Madison’s ideas on checks and balances and federalism remain the bedrock of American law.

“We honor President James Madison for his integral role in the founding of our nation and the American acquisition of Florida,” Governor DeSantis said during the ceremony. “With this new statue in Madison County, we now have statues of our Founding Fathers in every Florida county that is named for a founder.”
The location of the statue is particularly significant. Madison County was established in 1827 and named for the fourth president, who played a pivotal role in Florida’s transition to a U.S. territory. During his presidency, Madison authorized the 1810 annexation of West Florida and pursued the acquisition of East Florida, setting the stage for eventual statehood.
State officials at the event highlighted how Madison’s philosophy of limited government still resonates in modern administration. Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd noted that the statue serves as a reminder that “individual liberty rests on limited government, personal responsibility, and a deep respect for the rule of law.”
Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Alexis Lambert added that Madison’s focus on “long-term thinking and responsible governance” remains a guiding principle for managing the state’s natural resources today.

The ceremony also drew leaders from the James Madison Institute (JMI), a think tank that bears the president’s name. Dr. J. Robert McClure III, President and CEO of JMI, emphasized Madison’s role in securing the Bill of Rights and the ratification of the Constitution.
“As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of our founding, it is particularly fitting that the State of Florida today is honoring James Madison, the chief architect of the U.S. Constitution,” McClure said.
The completion of this statue circuit is part of Florida’s broader semiquincentennial celebrations. By securing a monument in every county named after a Founder, the state has finalized a permanent trail of historical markers intended to educate the public on the men who drafted the blueprint for the “American experiment.”
