The community of Summerfield is reeling this week after a local childcare provider was hauled off to jail on multiple felony charges. On Monday, February 23, 2026, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) arrested 31-year-old Laura Flores following an investigation into what was happening behind closed doors at Bright Beginnings Learning Center.
The legal dominoes began to fall on February 13, when Deputy Hammons arrived at the facility, located at 14950 U.S. Highway 441, to assist the Department of Children and Families (DCF). What started as a report of a single child injury quickly spiraled into a much larger criminal case.
While reviewing the classroom’s surveillance cameras, the deputy reportedly watched footage of Flores “forcefully picking up a child and throwing the child onto a mat.”
That single clip opened a floodgate for Major Crimes detectives. As Detective Coates and other investigators combed through the facility’s video history, the evidence of physical trauma grew.

According to reports, the footage captured Flores striking one child on the back of the head and kicking another so hard the toddler fell face-first onto the floor.
The disturbing details didn’t stop there. Further review of the tapes allegedly showed Flores striking a child in the abdomen and pinning a child to the floor with her foot during nap time. In one of the most specific instances cited by investigators, Flores was seen swaddling a child before “slapping the child across the face.”
Flores now faces three counts of Child Abuse. Following the conclusion of the video review, she was taken into custody by Detective Coates and transported to the Marion County Jail.
