The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday rejected an appeal by a Death Row inmate convicted in the gruesome murders of his girlfriend and her two children in 2008 in Hillsborough County.

Edwin Allen Covington was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in the slayings of his girlfriend, Lisa Freiberg, her 7-year-old son, Zachary, and her 2-year-old daughter, Heather Savannah, according to the Supreme Court ruling.

Lisa Freiberg, for example, died of a wound to her neck that “appeared to have been made by a back-and-forth sawing motion with a knife, the ruling said.

The 2-year-old girl was beaten and stabbed and died as a result of her neck being cut, while the 7-year-old boy was beaten and died of five stab wounds to his neck and back, according to medical-examiner testimony.

In the appeal, Covington, now 50, raised a series of issues, including that he received “ineffective assistance of counsel” during his sentencing. But the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the arguments.
