In a move signaled to reshape Florida’s economic landscape, the state’s Congressional Delegation has formally thrown its weight behind federal efforts to center SpaceX’s Starship program on the Space Coast.

Led by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), the delegation issued a letter praising key transportation and defense officials for prioritizing Florida as the primary hub for the massive rocket system.

The correspondence, directed to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford, highlights a strategic pivot that lawmakers say will secure American superiority in space for decades.

According to the delegation, the timeline is set: Starship operations are scheduled to begin at the Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) in 2026. By 2027, the program will expand to include Launch Complex 37 (SLC-37).

“Starship directly supports critical NASA and national security priorities, including safely landing Americans on the Moon before China and expanding broadband access to millions of Americans,” the lawmakers wrote.

The shift isn’t just about national pride; it’s a financial play. The delegation emphasized that anchoring Starship in Florida will trigger a “boom in the local economy,” citing billions in potential investments and the creation of thousands of high-paying jobs across the state.

Operational efficiency was a key focal point of the letter. Lawmakers pointed to data from Starship’s tenth test flight on August 26, noting that the FAA was able to reopen affected airspace in just nine minutes. The letter favorably compared that window to the duration of “most Florida summer thunderstorms,” arguing that the massive vehicle can operate without disrupting commercial air traffic or other government assets.

The delegation credited the Department of Transportation, the Department of the Air Force, and the FAA for the “tactical management and broad coordination” required to integrate the LOX/Methane vehicle systems into the National Airspace System.

The letter was signed by a broad coalition of Florida Republicans, including Reps. Aaron Bean, Gus Bilirakis, Kat Cammack, Mario Diaz-Balart, and Anna Paulina Luna, among others.

“Starship’s fully reusable architecture positions the United States to establish a permanent crewed presence on the Moon and ultimately Mars,” the letter concluded. “These operations will principally occur from Florida.”
