A Florida man who ran to Texas to escape a child sex crimes investigation is heading home on probation instead of serving time behind bars. Giovanni Curtis, 22, was sentenced to 10 years of probation on June 24 after striking a plea deal.
Circuit Judge Howard Maltz withheld adjudication during the sentencing, which followed Curtis’s guilty plea to two counts of child abuse. With the legal agreement finalized, Curtis was released from the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility in Flagler County.
The case originated in Florida, but Curtis left the state before local deputies could lock him up. The El Paso Police Department eventually tracked him down and arrested him in Texas back in November 2025 on a Flagler County fugitive warrant.
While Curtis avoided a prison sentence, his freedom comes with a long list of strict rules for the next decade. Under his special sex-offender probation conditions, he is completely banned from having unsupervised contact with minors.
He is also legally prohibited from drinking alcohol or using drugs, and his internet access will be heavily monitored and restricted.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly acknowledged that the police department wasn’t thrilled with the lenient sentence, but explained that the deal ultimately honors the victims’ preferences and keeps them off the witness stand.
“While we do not believe the outcome of this case is fitting for his heinous acts, we support the victims’ wishes in this case and pray they may find comfort and healing now that the legal proceedings are behind them,” Sheriff Staly said. “Not going to trial saves the victim from being traumatized again, which is critical for the health, well-being, and future of the victim.”
