Florida leads a coalition challenging the traditional accreditation “monopoly” with a focus on student outcomes and ideological independence.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis today announced the formation of a new university accrediting body, the Commission for Public Higher Education (CPHE), a consortium of six states aimed at disrupting what they call the “activist-controlled accreditation monopoly” in higher education.
This first-of-its-kind initiative seeks to refocus academic standards on student achievement and outcomes, free from perceived ideological capture.
The CPHE, comprised of public university systems from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, will offer an alternative accreditation model. Governor DeSantis, speaking from Boca Raton, emphasized the new commission’s commitment to “transparent, rigorous, outcomes-based standards” to ensure Florida, and eventually other states, leads the way in a reformed higher education landscape.

“Florida has set an example for the country in reclaiming higher education—and we’re working to make that success permanent. That means breaking the activist-controlled accreditation monopoly,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. He asserted that the CPHE “will help ensure the Free State of Florida leads the way in higher education for decades to come.”
Chancellor Ray Rodrigues of the State University System of Florida highlighted the CPHE’s focus on “ensuring institutions provide high-quality, high-value programs, use student data to drive decisions, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the process.”
Thad H. Westbrook, Chair of the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees, stated that the USC System joined the consortium because “innovating accreditation provides great benefits for universities, colleges, and our nation.” He anticipates the implemented innovations will “benefit students while making accreditation more efficient and more focused on outcomes, quality, and success.”

This move comes after years of growing tension between several states and traditional accrediting bodies, with states like Florida and North Carolina even passing legislation requiring universities to seek alternative accreditation. Proponents of the CPHE argue that existing accreditors have become too focused on ideological agendas rather than core academic quality and student success.
The establishment of the Commission for Public Higher Education marks a significant step in what many see as a burgeoning national debate over the direction and oversight of higher education. While the CPHE will need to navigate the federal recognition process, its formation signals a concerted effort by a bloc of states to redefine the benchmarks for university excellence and accountability.
