Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Thursday that he will respond to attacks by former President Donald Trump, but added that he is focused on President Joe Biden — and Trump should be as well.

At a press conference in New Hampshire, DeSantis was asked about responding to Trump’s criticism, which has ramped up since DeSantis entered the 2024 GOP presidential primary last week.

“So look, I’m going to respond to attacks. I mean, if you say, [former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew] Cuomo did a better job with COVID than Florida did. First of all, that’s not what he used to say. Six months ago, he would have never said that right,” said DeSantis.

“He used to say how great Florida was. Hell, his whole family moved to Florida under my governorship. Are you kidding me?”

“If someone is saying that,” DeSantis continued, “I’m gonna counterpunch and I’m gonna fight back on it. I’m going to focus my fire on Biden and I think he should do the same. He gives Biden a free pass. I’m focusing on Biden – that’s my focus.”

As for Trump’s recent comment that New York outperformed Florida in dealing with COVID, the governor said that was “detached from reality.”

DeSantis recalled that people, sometimes tearfully, would approach him to thank him for avoiding the shutdowns prevalent in many other states.

“This was personal for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people,” DeSantis added, noting Trump was wrong to “flippantly” say, “You should have done (like) New York.”

The governor also noted that Trump, as a Florida resident and a Republican, should have cheered the big wins posted last fall by himself and GOP candidates in federal, state, and local races, as well as the policies that Republicans in Tallahassee have promoted and implemented.

“If you put the mission first, you would definitely be cheering for that. He hasn’t done that. … We hear him trashing Florida,” said DeSantis.

“I’m gonna defend my state, I’m gonna defend the people of my state, and I’m gonna defend what we’ve been able to do to really put points on the board.”
