DeSantis Highlights Jefferson’s Enduring Principles of Liberty, Education, and Religious Freedom in Kickoff of America250FL Campaign
Governor Ron DeSantis today officially launched Florida’s America250FL campaign, a statewide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. As a highlight of the launch, Governor DeSantis unveiled a new statue of Thomas Jefferson in Jefferson County, honoring the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and a pivotal figure in American history.
“While others are tearing statues of our founding fathers down, Florida is putting them up,” declared Governor Ron DeSantis. “Thomas Jefferson was a critical figure in the formation of our country, especially in drafting the Declaration of Independence. In Florida, we celebrate the Founding Fathers.”

This unveiling marks the second in a series of statue installations planned across Florida counties named for America’s founders. Over the next year, similar statues will be unveiled in Washington, Franklin, Hamilton, Madison, and Monroe Counties. These events are part of a broader calendar of celebrations and activities that will intensify across Florida leading up to the nation’s semiquincentennial next year.
Governor DeSantis emphasized Thomas Jefferson’s profound legacy as the “Father of the Declaration of Independence,” highlighting how his words provided the moral and philosophical bedrock for America’s pursuit of liberty. The Governor also underscored Jefferson’s unwavering commitment to religious freedom, civic virtue, and education—principles that continue to guide Florida’s approach to civic instruction.

Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida has made significant investments in civic education, aiming to ensure that students have a deep understanding and appreciation of the nation’s foundational principles. In 2021, the Governor signed legislation establishing the Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative, a $129 million program designed to expand civics curriculum across all grade levels and establish the Civics Seal of Excellence Endorsement for Florida teachers.
To date, more than 21,000 teachers have participated in the program, with over 3,700 more on a waitlist. Additionally, over $59 million in teacher stipends has been awarded.
Further demonstrating this commitment, Governor DeSantis signed Florida’s Fiscal Year 2025-26 budget earlier this week, which allocates an additional $7.4 million to expand civic literacy and debate programs statewide.

- Learn about Florida’s unique role in American history.
- Plan visits to various historic sites across the state.
