Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has directed that flags across Florida be flown at half-staff to honor the life and legacy of former Governor Buddy MacKay, who passed away on December 31, 2024, at the age of 91.

Governor MacKay’s decades-long career in public service left an indelible mark on Florida. Born in Ocala, MacKay began his service to the nation as a member of the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

His political career commenced in 1968 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, where he served with distinction. He later held three terms in both the Florida Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.

MacKay’s leadership extended to the state’s executive branch, where he served as Lieutenant Governor for two terms beginning in 1991. Following the untimely death of Governor Lawton Chiles in 1998, MacKay assumed the governorship, ensuring stability and continuity during a critical period.

“Former Governor Buddy MacKay exemplified a lifetime of dedication to public service and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of Florida,” said Governor DeSantis. “He leaves behind a legacy of integrity and leadership that will continue to inspire future generations of Floridians.”

In honor of Governor MacKay’s service, Governor DeSantis has ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Florida until sunset on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Governor MacKay is remembered for his tireless efforts to improve the lives of Floridians, and his legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched during his service to the state and the nation.
