HENDRY COUNTY, Fla. — State troopers are searching for a driver who fled the scene of a deadly crash early Sunday morning on US 27. The incident left an unidentified male pedestrian dead and investigators hunting for an older-model white pickup truck.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of US 27 and Francisco Street. A synopsis of the official report indicates that an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on US 27 when a pedestrian attempted to cross the travel lanes. The vehicle struck the man and kept driving, leaving the scene before authorities arrived.
Emergency responders pronounced the pedestrian dead at the site of the collision. Officials are currently withholding his name until a positive identification can be made and his next of kin are notified.
State troopers have focused their search on what is described as an older-model white pickup truck, possibly a dually, with noticeable damage to its left front headlamp assembly.
The FHP is asking anyone who recognizes the truck or has any details regarding the driver to step forward. Tips can be reported directly to the Florida Highway Patrol by dialing *FHP, or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
