A Florida Highway Patrol trooper is recovering after being stabbed during a roadside confrontation with a reckless driver early Saturday morning. The incident, which unfolded around 5:30 a.m. near Northwest 107th Avenue on State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County, resulted in the trooper discharging his firearm and striking the suspect.
The situation began when troopers responded to reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the highway.
A trooper located the car sitting in the grassy center median and made contact with the female driver. A young child was also found inside the vehicle at the time.
While the trooper was interacting with the woman, authorities say she pulled a knife and stabbed him multiple times, causing injuries to his head, neck, and shoulder. The trooper then fired his weapon, hitting the woman. Both the officer and the suspect were transported to HCA Florida Kendall Trauma for medical treatment.
Further investigation revealed that the woman was wanted on several active arrest warrants, including charges for child neglect, child abuse, and fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Following the incident, the Department of Children and Families took the child into its care.
Florida Highway Patrol officials confirmed that the suspect will be booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail once she is medically cleared to leave the hospital. Because the criminal investigation into her actions remains active, the agency has stated it will not provide further comment.
As is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now conducting a formal review of the trooper’s use of force.
