Florida House Passes Anti-Riot Bill Friday, Lawmakers React

The Florida House passed House Bill 1 Friday, with 76 Yeas and 39 Nays, to increase penalties for crimes committed during a riot or protests.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ drafted the bill in November 2020, that expands the list of “forcible felonies” under Florida’s self-defense law to include criminal mischief causing “interruption or impairment” of a business.

Supporters of House Bill 1 say it will keep Florida safe, and violators off of the streets, while those against this bill say it’s a violation of the people’s first amendment rights and directly targets minority groups.

Florida Rep. Anthony Sabatini tweeted out, “Just voted YES on House Bill 1, the Anti-Riot legislation that will crackdown on the psychotic, angry, violent Antifa-led “protests” that have caused billions in damages and dozens of deaths. The radical leftist attack on the Rule of Law will NOT happen in Florida.”

Rep. Andrew Learned said in a tweet, “#HB1 is polling at 63% net-unpopular, but my 14,000+ opposition e-mails with only 6 in support tell me all I need to know of HOW MUCH people care. What are we doing here if not representing #ForThePeople?!?”

“This bill might be the first in the history of the Florida House to unite abortion protestors with Planned Parenthood. This has united self-described socialists with police chiefs. Trump rioters with Black Lives Matter protestors. All in opposition,” tweeted out Official Account of the Democratic Caucus of the Florida House of Representatives.

Florida House Republicans said, “The Florida House just PASSED #HB1, this legislation responds to callous acts of all violent mobs – regardless of reason or viewpoint. #FlaPol #FLSession2021.”

“It is never okay to use violence as the means for protests. Not one member here wants to silence peaceful protesters. We want to protect the right of free speech, to allow that perfect union to continue.” said Rep. Randy Fine.

“This bill protects your rights to peaceful protest. Violence, destruction, harm, and destroying property are not peaceful — it is not civil, it’s not what the crafters of the First Amendment intended,” said Rep. Bobby Payne.

Rep. Anna V. Eskamani said, “I just want to take a moment to thank all of our incredible Democrats in the Florida House who spoke against #HB1 today with a special emphasis of gratitude to the black women I am honored to serve with. Onward.”
