A traffic stop on the Fourth of July ended in a major drug and weapons bust after a Walton County Sheriff’s Office K9 uncovered over 300 grams of methamphetamine hidden inside a truck’s toolbox.
The incident began Saturday afternoon around 3:00 p.m. on Otter Pond Road. A Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a white Chevy Silverado after observing a violation of an injunction. During the stop, deputies deployed K9 Aries to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle. The police dog quickly alerted handlers to the odor of narcotics coming from inside the truck.
Deputies searched the cab of the Silverado but initially found only methamphetamine residue located on the center console. However, a locked toolbox mounted in the bed of the truck caught their attention.
When the driver refused to unlock it, deputies bypassed the lock to gain entry. Inside, they found a large plastic bag filled with a white crystal substance. A field test confirmed the substance was methamphetamine, weighing in at just over 300 grams.
In addition to the narcotics, the search of the toolbox yielded a revolver with its serial number filed off, along with various items of drug paraphernalia.
The driver, identified as 43-year-old Wesley Thompson, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Walton County Jail.
Thompson has been officially charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, removing a serial number from a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violation of an injunction for stalking.
