Florida Keys Driver Arrested For Battery On Deputy After U.S. 1 Mangrove Crash

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – An 18-year-old Big Pine Key man was arrested Wednesday night following a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 1 that ended in a physical altercation with law enforcement.

Avery Travis Quiggle was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, and resisting arrest following the July 30 incident.

Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to Mile Marker 19 at approximately 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a rollover crash. Upon arrival, deputies found a Jeep SUV driven by Quiggle that had rolled over into the roadside mangroves. Quiggle was the only person inside the vehicle.

According to officials, no life-threatening injuries were reported, and Quiggle refused medical treatment at the scene.

Deputies noted that Quiggle was acting erratically and yelling profanities about the damage to his vehicle. During the response, Quiggle walked out into traffic on U.S. 1. A deputy pulled him out of the roadway to prevent him from being hit by passing vehicles.

Once moved to safety, Quiggle elbowed the deputy, raised his fists in a fighting stance, and continued shouting. Officers placed Quiggle into custody following a brief physical struggle, and he was transported to the county jail.
