Surrounded by his loving family and girlfriend, Casello’s death marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to public service, spanning decades as a firefighter and a committed politician.
“We are so sorry to say that Representative Joe Casello has passed away, surrounded by his loving family and girlfriend, following a heart attack. He was 73. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their love and support during this difficult time,” read a post on X from Florida House Democrats.

Before his impactful tenure in Florida politics, Casello served with distinction for three decades as a firefighter in Worcester, Massachusetts. His commitment to community safety and well-being was a hallmark of his career, a trait he carried into his political life. He first entered the political arena in Florida as a Boynton Beach city commissioner before being elected to the state House of Representatives in 2018.
Known for his affable nature and dedication, Casello had recently announced plans to run for a seat on the Palm Beach County Commission in 2026, demonstrating his continued desire to serve the public. His official profile on the state House of Representatives website noted his enjoyment of golf, a testament to his balanced life.
Tributes poured in from colleagues, reflecting on his character and contributions. Rep. Christine Hunschofsky shared her sentiments on X, stating, “Joe was a wonderful person, always positive and supportive. He was a Massachusetts native and had a wicked sense of humor. He served in the legislature with humility, grace, and a fierce sense of purpose. Joe was down-to-earth, kind, and cared about every person he came in contact with. He was always one of the best-dressed in Tallahassee, and I would call him GQ Joe. I will miss serving with Joe, and I will especially miss his friendship.”

A private ceremony will be held in Massachusetts to honor Representative Casello, his family’s home state. The Florida House Democrats stated that a public memorial service will be announced in the coming weeks, allowing colleagues, constituents, and friends to pay their respects to a man who served with such dedication.
Under Florida law, the passing of Representative Casello’s legislative seat creates a vacancy, requiring Governor Ron DeSantis to call a special election or special primary election to fill the position.
