A Florida man is behind bars following a fatal shooting in Tallahassee earlier this week. Tallahassee Police confirmed that 34-year-old Gage Champion was taken into custody on Wednesday, just a day after the discovery of a body in a Northwest Tallahassee neighborhood.
The investigation kicked off on the evening of February 17, when officers arrived at a home on the 2800 block of Mission Road. Inside, they found a person dead from several gunshot wounds. It didn’t take long for detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit to piece together a timeline.
Neighbors and witnesses reportedly saw both the victim and Champion inside the house together earlier that same day.
According to police reports, the pair had been locked in a heated argument for several days before the shooting occurred. By gathering evidence at the scene and interviewing those nearby, detectives felt they had enough to pin the crime on Champion.
After working with the State Attorney’s Office to secure a warrant, authorities tracked Champion down in Crawfordville. He was arrested on February 18 without further incident.
Champion now faces a charge of first-degree murder.
While an arrest has been made, the Tallahassee Police Department is still keeping the lines open for any additional information. They are asking anyone who knows more about what happened on Mission Road to call their main office or leave an anonymous tip through Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
