A 42-year-old Satsuma man was arrested Wednesday morning after striking a school crossing guard with his vehicle and driving away, according to local authorities.
Brian Ferrell faces a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge following the Aug. 12 incident at the intersection of St. Johns Avenue and Palm Avenue.
Officials said the crossing guard had just finished helping students across Palm Avenue when Ferrell made a right turn from St. Johns Avenue. According to police reports, Ferrell ignored the guard’s sign and presence in the crosswalk, struck her, and continued driving without stopping to render aid or check for injuries.
Several bystanders stopped to assist the guard, and one witness provided responding Palatka police officers with the vehicle’s license plate number. Officers located Ferrell shortly after and placed him under arrest.
Ferrell was booked into the Putnam County Jail and later released on a $150 bond.
The crossing guard suffered minor bruising and soreness but refused to leave her post, staying to finish her morning crossing duties.
Following the incident, authorities thanked the witnesses who stepped forward and issued a reminder to motorists that local schools are back in session, urging drivers to exercise caution around increased pedestrian traffic.
