A federal jury has convicted a Florida man for his role in a scheme to cash a counterfeit $560,625 U.S. Treasury check at a Wyoming bank.
Daniel Keith McDougal, 37, was found guilty of passing a counterfeit U.S. Treasury check, bank fraud, conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and conspiracy to defraud the United States. The verdict followed a five-day trial before U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson.
Court records and trial evidence showed that McDougal and co-conspirator Kennard Bouk traveled from Florida to Wyoming in January 2023 specifically to pass the fake check at a bank in Cheyenne.
“We will not allow out-of-state fraudsters to target Wyoming financial institutions. This verdict shows that no matter how far you travel to commit fraud, federal law enforcement will find you and bring you to justice,” said U.S. Attorney Smith.
Judge Johnson scheduled McDougal’s sentencing for Oct. 26, 2026. McDougal faces up to 30 years in federal prison, at least three years of supervised release, restitution, and a fine of up to $1.5 million.
The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and the U.S. Secret Service investigated the case, which was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming.
