A 52-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was convicted of killing his friend during an altercation on a boat dock in Ruskin, near Tampa.
Kamal Padlowski received a mandatory life sentence on Monday. A jury found him guilty of first-degree murder last month for the May 25, 2024, death of Melvin Jimenez.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the two men had been drinking together at a local restaurant before Padlowski invited Jimenez onto his sailboat, named “All That Jazz.” Authorities said a dispute began on the boat after Jimenez allegedly made a rude comment toward Padlowski’s girlfriend.
Padlowski initially told investigators that he kicked Jimenez off the boat and never saw him again. However, dock surveillance footage contradicted his statement.
The video showed Jimenez stepping off the boat and attempting to put on his sandals when Padlowski approached him aggressively. Padlowski shoved Jimenez, causing him to hit his head hard on the wooden dock and lose consciousness. Padlowski then grabbed the unconscious man by his ankles and pushed him into the water.
“The victim appears motionless and sinks under the surface of the water,” investigators noted in the affidavit.
The footage also recorded Padlowski tossing Jimenez’s sandals into the water. Police later recovered Jimenez’s body and arrested Padlowski at the scene.
During the trial, a witness testified that she passed Padlowski on the dock shortly after the incident. She told the court that Padlowski said to her, “I think I just killed my best friend.”
At Monday’s sentencing hearing, Jimenez’s daughter, Kim Springer, spoke about the impact of her father’s loss.
“Mel was my dad, because he showed up for me every day,” Springer said. “He chose us and we chose him. He became the first man I ever trusted completely. He became my safe space, my protector and the person who taught me that not everyone would hurt me.”
Judge Michelle Sisco addressed Padlowski directly before handing down the life sentence, pointing out that he could have called 911 after Jimenez struck his head.
“From the moment I first saw the video, I just couldn’t even believe it was real, what I was watching,” Judge Sisco said. “I couldn’t believe there’d be such a lack of sympathy for another human being.”
