An 85-year-old Florida man has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death after he allegedly struck and killed an elderly woman in a grocery store parking lot on Friday and then drove home.

Darrell Briggs, 85, reportedly told St. Petersburg police officers that he knew he had hit “something” in the parking lot of a Publix, but allegedly chose to drive away instead of stopping.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Friday in the parking lot of a Publix grocery store in St. Petersburg. Police say Briggs was behind the wheel when his vehicle allegedly struck 91-year-old Mary Broughton. Broughton was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Following the crash, Briggs allegedly continued driving out of the parking lot and drove to his nearby apartment.

St. Petersburg Police Department officers were able to track Briggs down at his apartment, where they located the vehicle believed to have been involved in the incident. Upon interviewing Briggs, he allegedly admitted to knowing he had struck something, according to court documents.

Briggs was subsequently arrested and booked into the Pinellas County Jail on one felony count of leaving the scene of a crash causing death. He posted a $50,000 bond and was released on Sunday.
