A Florida man, who happens to be a convicted felon has been arrested after deputies seized trafficking amounts of the deadly opioid fentanyl during a traffic stop Thursday.

James Gore, 44, of 759 Alice Jimmie Circle, Immokalee, is in the Collier County jail on multiple charges including fentanyl trafficking.

“These deputies looked beyond the traffic stop and identified a much larger crime was being committed,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “Thanks to them, lives were surely saved by stopping this poison from being distributed across our community.”

Around 11 a.m. on Friday, deputies pulled Gore over for speeding on Immokalee Road near County Line Road in Immokalee. Deputies found Gore’s license was suspended indefinitely. They also learned he is a habitual traffic offender who was out on bond from St. Lucie County for a pending habitual driving charge.

Deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. They searched the vehicle and recovered 10 grams of fentanyl packaged for individual sale – enough to kill 5,000 people.

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin.

It can be a threat to anyone who comes into contact with it as it can be absorbed through the skin or accidentally inhaled. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says 1 kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill 500,000 people.

Deputies also found nearly 400 grams of marijuana and narcotic paraphernalia.

Gore was arrested and booked into the Collier County jail.
