Authorities in Nassau County have arrested a fifth person in connection with a February incident where a one-year-old child ingested methamphetamine inside a Callahan residence.
Nassau County Sheriff’s Deputies took 46-year-old Mark Allen Windham into custody on Saturday. He faces charges of Child Neglect Causing Great Bodily Harm and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with Residue.
The case dates back to Tuesday, February 24, when detectives launched an investigation after learning the toddler drank from a sippy cup. The child’s parents told investigators they later found a bag of methamphetamine sitting at the bottom of the cup.
Detectives determined that neither the parents nor the other adults in the home called 911 immediately after realizing the child had been exposed to the narcotics. The child was treated at a local hospital for a possible overdose.
During interviews with law enforcement, four other residents—Hayden Simmons, Damien Windham, Erica Foley, and Judith Addison—pointed to Mark Windham as the source of the drugs. Simmons and Damien Windham told detectives that they saw Mark Windham pour the liquid contents of his own cup directly into the toddler’s sippy cup.
The child’s parents and the two other adults living in the home were previously arrested on related charges.
A warrant was issued for Mark Windham on February 26, leading to his arrest months later following an ongoing investigation.
“Time doesn’t diminish our commitment to accountability. Our detectives continued working this case for months, following leads and pursuing every avenue until they identified and arrested everyone responsible,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said in a statement. “I’m proud of their persistence and dedication to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community.”
Deputies booked Windham into the Nassau County Jail & Detention Center. His bond was set at more than $25,000 for the child neglect charge and $2,500 for the drug paraphernalia charge.
