Florida Man Who Broke Into Woman’s Home Busted After Leaving His Cell Phone On Her Bed

A Florida man that is accused of entering a woman’s bedroom was identified and arrested by Volusia sheriff’s deputies and detectives after his cell phone was found on her bed, where he left it behind.

Deputies responded to the incident on June 27 around 12:30 a.m.

The victim, a 31-year-old woman, reported she’d been asleep in her bedroom when she woke up, noticed her bedroom door was open, and then saw a stranger standing next to her.

The victim said she started to yell and scream, and the suspect tried to cover her mouth with his hand. She kept fighting and yelling, and eventually, the suspect let her go and calmly walked out of the house.

Detectives canvassed the neighborhood and obtained video surveillance footage of a possible suspect riding a black beach cruiser-style bicycle in the area at the time of the incident.

Shortly after that, the victim discovered a cell phone in her bed with a home screen that displayed a photo that appeared to be the suspect and his family.

Deputies were able to trace the phone back to Cory Winston, 52, in Deltona, about 2 miles from the victim’s residence.

When deputies arrived at his address, they found Winston wearing red basketball shorts. A black beach cruiser bicycle was observed in his open garage. Winston told detectives he had been home all day.

When asked for his phone number, Winston provided it. When deputies called the number, the recovered cell phone rang. Winston’s story changed to indicate he had been to Walmart and lost his phone.

However, detectives were able to confirm Winston answered a voice call on that phone within an hour of the burglary incident.

While being interviewed, Winston briefly resisted deputies and detectives, striking at least one deputy in the face during a struggle.

Winston is charged with burglary with assault/battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, and violation of probation on previous charges of false imprisonment and kidnapping in a domestic incident.

His violation of probation charge carries no bond.

Winston’s criminal history does not include any past sex offenses.

A sample of his DNA was collected. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, and any similar cases should be reported to the Deltona Detectives Unit at 386-860-7030.
