A Florida woman will spend 10 years in prison after pleading no contest to aggravated manslaughter of a child. Nicole Marie Laber, 31, was sentenced Tuesday in Collier County Circuit Court following a Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) investigation into the June 17, 2023, death of an infant in her care.

In addition to her prison term, Laber will also serve 10 years of probation.

The investigation began after Laber initially told detectives a fabricated story. She claimed she had left the infant alone for a moment to retrieve her dog and another child who had gotten out the front door.

According to her initial statement, she returned to find the infant face down in a dog’s water bowl.

However, a thorough CCSO investigation uncovered the tragic truth. Detectives determined that Laber had left the infant unattended in a bathtub, strapped into a booster seat.

The infant drowned after the booster seat tipped over, trapping the child beneath a few inches of water. Following the drowning, Laber attempted to conceal her actions by cleaning up the scene, dressing the deceased child, and concocting the false story about the dog’s water bowl.

“Our detectives worked tirelessly to uncover the truth and bring justice for this innocent child,” said Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. Laber’s plea and subsequent sentencing bring an end to the case, holding her accountable for both the child’s death and her efforts to cover it up.
