Florida Mom Indicted After Her 5-Year-Old Child’s Body Found On Waterline In Trash Bag

A grand jury in Florida has handed up a first-degree murder indictment against a mother whose 5-year-old son was found dead in a trash bag last month. Jalynda Karie Smith, 36, is now facing charges of First Degree Murder and Tampering with Evidence following the March 26, 2026, ruling.

The investigation began on February 6, 2026, when the boy’s body was discovered along the waterline of Perdido Bay off Lillian Highway. According to investigative reports, the child—later identified as Jakaiden Smith—was found wrapped in blankets and towels inside a black trash bag.

At the time of his death, the child weighed only 20 pounds, which is approximately one-third less than his recorded weight just two months prior. Medical examiners described the boy as “severely emaciated” and “malnourished.”

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons noted that the boy’s aunt had contacted authorities with concerns about her nephew’s safety just shortly before the body was recovered.

“Our children deserve better than this,” Simmons said during a press briefing, adding that the child appeared to have been deceased before being discarded.

Investigators also reported that Smith’s phone and iPad had been factory reset only minutes before her arrest in a Gulf Breeze parking lot.

Court records indicate that Smith has a prior history with the Department of Children and Families, including a 2022 charge of child neglect that was later dropped after she completed a parental skills course.

Smith is currently being held at the Escambia County Jail without bond. Assistant State Attorney Erin Ambrose is leading the prosecution on behalf of State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden. Smith’s next court appearance, a scheduled docket day, is set for May 19, 2026.
