A Florida woman has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for her role in a brutal pattern of child abuse and torture that left her 5-year-old son with a fractured skull and dozens of visible injuries. Taylor Schaefer, 30, pleaded no contest to a long list of charges, including aggravated child abuse, conspiracy to commit child neglect with great bodily harm, and failure to report child abuse.
The investigation began in May 2023 when Schaefer called 911, claiming she had a “gut feeling” her live-in boyfriend, 32-year-old Shawn M. Stone, was abusing the child. However, video surveillance seized from inside the home told a different story.
Detectives discovered footage showing that Schaefer was present during the beatings and failed to intervene. In one instance, a video recorded her mopping the area where her son had just been beaten with a mop handle.
Medical professionals who treated the boy found 46 visible injuries in addition to internal trauma. Evidence revealed the child was frequently placed in a dog cage, deprived of food, and left with his hands bound behind his back for nearly 20 hours at a time.
The abuse in the home was not limited to one child.
Investigators determined that another child in the residence was forced to drink boiling water and was beaten with various household objects. A third child was found to be suffering from medical neglect, lacking the necessary care and nutrition for a serious health condition.
Stone, who was labeled “Scumbag of the Week” by Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood following his initial arrest, faces dozens of charges including aggravated child abuse and false imprisonment.
“This morning, Shawn M. Stone punched, kicked, and used a mop handle to beat a 5-year-old child who had an accident,” Sheriff Chitwood stated at the time of the arrest. “He’s headed to jail.”
While Schaefer is now headed to prison for several decades, the investigation into the full extent of the neglect and conspiracy within the household continues, as Stone is still in the legal process.
