U.S. Lawmakers Stand with María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, Denounce Maduro’s Refusal to Acknowledge Election Results
As the one-year anniversary of Venezuela’s 2024 presidential election approaches, U.S. Senators Rick Scott (R-FL) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) met with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado this week, reiterating strong bipartisan support for her movement and for Edmundo González Urrutia, who they recognize as Venezuela’s rightfully elected president.
Following their meeting, Senators Scott and Shaheen, joined by Senators John Curtis (R-UT) and Tim Kaine (D-VA), issued a joint bipartisan statement unequivocally condemning the Nicolás Maduro regime’s ongoing repression and human rights violations.

The statement highlighted the July 2024 election, where “millions of Venezuelans turned out and delivered a clear mandate for change – overwhelmingly electing democratic opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia and the movement started by María Corina Machado.”
The senators accused the Maduro regime of abandoning “even the veneer of a democratic outcome” by refusing to release promised ballots that they claim would affirm Maduro’s victory.
“The truth today is as clear as it was as the returns poured in on July 28, 2024: the Venezuelan people yearn for new leadership and a democratic country that is once again part of the international community,” the statement read.

This bipartisan show of solidarity underscores the continued U.S. commitment to democratic principles in Venezuela amidst the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis.
The senators concluded by recognizing “the resilience of the Venezuelan democratic opposition” and reaffirming their united stand with the Venezuelan people in their aspirations for a brighter future.
