Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) have spearheaded a bicameral letter to the leaders of Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France, urging them to abandon their plans to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state.

The letter, signed by 23 U.S. lawmakers, warns that such a move would be a “reckless and dangerous” step that would reward terrorism and jeopardize long-term peace in the Middle East. RELATED: U.S. Suspends Visa Approvals For Palestinian Passport Holders Amid Escalating Tensions

The lawmakers’ letter, addressed to Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese, Justin Trudeau, and Keir Starmer, and President Emmanuel Macron, asserts that recognizing a Palestinian state under current conditions would undermine the principles of direct negotiations. The letter argues that this action would remove any incentive for Palestinian groups to renounce terrorism, recognize Israel’s right to exist, and come to the negotiating table in good faith.

The U.S. representatives highlight the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, noting that many of the targeted nations also lost citizens on that tragic day. They emphasize that Hamas continues to hold hostages and engage in what they describe as “barbaric” behavior.

The letter contends that rewarding Hamas’s violence and “rogue behavior” with statehood would set a dangerous precedent, making violence, not diplomacy, the most expedient path for terrorist groups to achieve their political aims.

The lawmakers also raised concerns that recognizing a Palestinian state would fuel a sharp increase in antisemitic activity observed in each of the allied countries. They argue that legitimizing what they refer to as a “Palestinian terror state” would only provide greater motivation to “violent antisemitic mobs,” placing Jewish communities around the world in greater peril.

Finally, the letter cautions that proceeding with recognition would put the allied nations “at odds with long-standing U.S. policy and interests” and could invite “punitive measures.” The U.S. lawmakers reiterate that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through direct negotiations, a process that they say would be jeopardized by unilateral actions.
