Florida Ranching Trailblazer: Dr. LuJean Waters Named 2026 Woman Of The Year In Agriculture

Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson has officially named Dr. LuJean Waters as the 2026 Woman of the Year in Agriculture. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the Florida agricultural community, as Waters represents both the deep history of the state’s ranching industry and its future through her work in veterinary medicine and education.

A seventh-generation Florida cattle rancher, Dr. Waters operates Heartland Large Animal Services. Her ambulatory veterinary practice serves livestock producers throughout Central Florida, providing essential medical care to the region’s herds.

Beyond her clinical work, she serves as an educator at Warner University in Lake Wales, where she teaches courses on animal science and beef cattle production.

“Dr. LuJean Waters has dedicated her life to serving Florida agriculture and the people who keep it strong,” Commissioner Wilton Simpson said during the announcement. “She understands the responsibility that comes with feeding our state and protecting our agricultural heritage, and she is helping to ensure the next generation is ready to carry that forward. It is an honor to recognize her as the 2026 Woman of the Year in Agriculture.”

Waters’ resume is filled with leadership roles that have shaped the industry. She has served as the Chair of the Florida Cattlemen’s Association Animal Health Committee and held positions on both the Florida Beef Council and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Board. Notably, she broke new ground as the first woman to serve as president of the Polk County Cattlemen’s Association.

Her impact extends into the local community through mentorship and volunteerism. Dr. Waters frequently works with youth agriculture programs, focusing specifically on supporting students with disabilities and providing hands-on learning for those involved in livestock exhibitions. She regularly hosts educational clinics and offers veterinary services to help young people get a footing in the industry.

The Woman of the Year in Agriculture award has been a staple of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) since 1985.

In partnership with the Florida State Fair Authority, the award recognizes women who have made exceptional contributions to the state’s diverse agricultural sectors, ranging from timber and citrus to aquaculture and education. Dr. Waters will be formally presented with the honor during the Florida State Fair in Tampa.
