A new study analyzing emergency medical services (EMS) response times across the U.S. has ranked Florida among the top ten states with the quickest response times, highlighting the efficiency of the state’s emergency infrastructure.
According to data collected by Omega Law Group, which analyzed EMS response times for fatal accidents from 2018 to 2022, Florida ranked tenth on the list with an average response time of 8.47 minutes.
While this is slightly slower than top-ranked Rhode Island, which boasts an impressive 6.21-minute response time, Florida’s emergency services still perform significantly better than many other states.

Top 10 States with Quickest EMS Response Times:
- Rhode Island – 6.21 minutes
- Massachusetts – 6.34 minutes
- Nevada – 6.44 minutes
- Connecticut – 7.09 minutes
- Delaware – 7.26 minutes
- Colorado – 7.44 minutes
- New Jersey – 7.83 minutes
- Michigan – 8.26 minutes
- Illinois – 8.33 minutes
- Florida – 8.47 minutes
On the other end of the spectrum, California recorded the longest average EMS response time at 17.85 minutes, nearly three times slower than Rhode Island.
Wyoming and North Dakota followed closely, with response times of 17.54 minutes and 14.36 minutes, respectively. Experts attribute these longer response times to vast rural landscapes and population density challenges that make reaching emergency sites more difficult.

A spokesperson from Omega Law Group noted that Rhode Island’s top ranking could be due to its small geographical size and relatively low population, allowing EMS personnel to cover shorter distances efficiently.
However, states with vast, rural areas—such as Wyoming and Alaska—face logistical challenges in ensuring timely emergency care. “Even populous California struggles with long response times due to traffic congestion and the geographic spread of its communities,” the spokesperson said.
Experts warn that delayed EMS response times can have severe consequences, including worsened injuries, reduced survival rates, and increased legal and financial implications for accident victims and their families.
“These figures highlight the need for improved emergency response infrastructure, additional resources, and innovative solutions to reduce response times and enhance public safety,” the spokesperson added.
