A chaotic security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has ignited a sharp exchange between Representatives Anna Paulina Luna and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over the rhetoric of political violence.
The confrontation follows the shooting at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where nearly 2,500 guests had gathered for the annual event.
The incident began when 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, bypassed a security checkpoint. Armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, Allen opened fire on law enforcement officers.
One Secret Service agent was struck during the exchange but escaped injury thanks to a bulletproof vest. Allen was apprehended shortly after the encounter. Investigators stated that Allen appeared to be acting alone and specifically targeted members of the Trump administration.

In the aftermath, Representative Ocasio-Cortez issued a statement condemning the attack, asserting that political violence has no place in the United States. She expressed relief that Donald Trump and the other attendees remained unharmed during the security breach.
However, Representative Luna quickly challenged her colleague’s remarks, accusing Ocasio-Cortez of maintaining a double standard. Luna pointed to Ocasio-Cortez’s recent social media activity, specifically the sharing of comments made by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Luna alleged that Jeffries’ own language has incited the very violence Ocasio-Cortez claimed to oppose.
“You literally just reposted Hakeem Jeffries quote calling for ‘total warfare everywhere’ only a days ago,” Luna posted on X. “Start being responsible with your platform instead of calling for violence.”
The controversy stems from an April 22nd press release in which Jeffries used combative language to describe legislative battles over redistricting. In that release, Jeffries characterized Republican efforts as “warfare” and told supporters that the American people would eventually end the GOP’s “redistricting war.”
Jeffries has frequently used similar metaphors in debates over healthcare and other Republican policy priorities and is well-known for his heated and violent rhetoric.
Luna has since called for a formal apology from the House Democratic leader.
“Hakeem Jeffries called for violence and warfare only a few days ago. He needs to publicly apologize,” she stated. RELATED: Hakeem Jeffries Faces Backlash Over ‘Fight In The Streets’ Comment
While Luna frames the language as an incitement to physical conflict, Jeffries’ office has previously used the terms in the context of political and legislative strategy.
