Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) wasted no time making his presence felt on the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services, using a recent hearing to condemn what he called “socialist proposals” and “anti-semitic rhetoric.”

The hearing, titled “Proxy Power and Proposal Abuse: Reforming Rule 14a-8 to Protect Shareholder Value,” quickly veered into a fiery debate on topics ranging from corporate boards to New York City’s public policy proposals.

The main event was a tense exchange between Donalds and Mr. Brad Lander, the Comptroller for the City of New York.

The Congressman, who noted he grew up in Brooklyn, challenged Lander on a proposal for government-run supermarkets in the city.

Donalds argued that past efforts by New York to distribute food were failures, claiming such stores “have less product available… The food is not nearly as good… Standards in them are frankly disgusting.” Lander defended the idea, citing examples of publicly-owned grocery stores working in other parts of the country to combat “food deserts” in low-income neighborhoods.

The confrontation escalated when Donalds pressed Lander to “condemn the phrase ‘Global Intifada.'” The phrase has been used in protests related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and is widely considered by many, including Donalds, to be an anti-semitic call to violence.

Lander stated he condemned the phrase but wouldn’t support making it illegal, to which Donalds retorted, “So you won’t condemn it… This is why the City of New York is going down the toilet.”

Donalds’ sharp remarks indicate a clear focus on fiscal conservatism and a willingness to confront what he views as radical left-wing policies. His appointment to the committee suggests a new, outspoken voice will be shaping debates on financial regulation and corporate governance.
