A group of conservative House Republicans, led by Congressman Brandon Gill (R-TX), introduced Articles of Impeachment against D.C. District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg on Tuesday, alleging “high crimes and misdemeanors” related to his authorization of federal surveillance on members of Congress.

Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) joined a growing list of cosponsors, asserting that Judge Boasberg “abused his power by weaponizing the judiciary” and is “unfit for office.” The resolution, introduced on Tuesday, accuses the Chief Judge of violating his constitutional oath and duty of impartiality.

The impeachment effort centers on Judge Boasberg’s alleged role in a covert operation run by the Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Biden, codenamed “Arctic Frost.”

According to the Articles of Impeachment, Judge Boasberg authorized Special Counsel John L. Smith (referred to as Jack Smith in the background materials) to issue warrants and “frivolous nondisclosure orders” as part of the operation. These orders allegedly gave the FBI direct access to the phone records and locations of Republican Members of Congress, including several U.S. Senators and one Representative, who were purportedly acting in their legislative capacities.

Republicans argue the authorization for the searches and subsequent nondisclosure orders, which prevented Members of Congress from being informed about the subpoenas, violated the Fourth Amendment protection against unwarranted searches and seizures.

“I proudly stand with Congressman Brandon Gill and my House colleagues in impeaching radical activist Judge James Boasberg,” Donalds said. “He abused his power by weaponizing the judiciary, he has committed high crimes and misdemeanors, he is unfit for office, and he should be impeached.”

In addition to Representatives Gill and Donalds, the Articles of Impeachment were cosponsored by a conservative bloc including Representatives Randy Fine (R-FL), Chip Roy (R-TX), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Keith Self (R-TX), Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), Eli Crane (R-AZ), Andy Ogles (R-TN), Mike Collins (R-GA), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ).
