Congressman Byron Donalds discusses ‘The D.C. CRIMES Act’ and calls for a narrower Fed mandate.
In an appearance on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow, Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) weighed in on two significant topics: the passage of his bill, H.R. 4922—”The D.C. CRIMES Act,” and the Federal Reserve’s recent actions on interest rates.
Treating Adults as Adults
Donalds explained the rationale behind his legislation, which he says aims to align the criminal justice system in Washington, D.C. with the rest of the country. The congressman highlighted a specific issue with D.C.’s previous law, which allowed individuals up to age 25 to be tried as juveniles.
“We treat children as juveniles, we treat adults as adults in the criminal justice system,” Donalds said.
He pointed to data suggesting that a significant portion of crimes, particularly robberies and carjackings, are committed by “youthful offenders” aged 18 to 25. The new act, which passed the House, is intended to impose “stiffer penalties” on these offenders by ensuring they are prosecuted as adults, not juveniles.
Calls for a Narrower Fed Mandate
The conversation also turned to the economy, with Donalds commenting on the Federal Reserve‘s recent 25 basis point rate cut. While he welcomed the move, he suggested it was insufficient, arguing that a 50 or even 75 basis point cut would have been more appropriate.
Donalds criticized the Fed for being too detached from the financial realities faced by everyday Americans. “They’re so ensconced and removed from everything, they get caught up in their charts and data points,” he said, emphasizing that the Fed should be more focused on “what’s happening with purchasing power.”
The congressman stated his long-held belief that the Federal Reserve’s mandate should be revised to focus solely on price stability. According to Donalds, this would better ensure that “the American people truly are getting the bang for their buck.” He noted that this position aligns with President Donald Trump’s advocacy for rate cuts.
