The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan were supposed to be about gold medals and world records, but a heated clash over national identity is starting to steal the spotlight. Florida Representative Byron Donalds, a leading contender for the 2026 Florida governor’s race, condemned what he calls “anti-American” rhetoric from members of Team USA.

The friction began during a Friday press conference when freestyle skier Hunter Hess was asked about representing the United States on the global stage. Hess, a first-time Olympian, admitted to having “mixed emotions,” stating that while he competes for his family and supporters, he does not personally align with current domestic policies.

“Just because I’m wearing the flag, it doesn’t mean I represent everything going on in the U.S.,” Hess told reporters.

Congressman Donalds, who has built his political brand on a staunch “America First” platform, did not take the comments lightly.

“YOU chose to wear our flag. YOU chose to represent our country. YOU chose to compete at the Olympics,” Donalds posted. “If that’s too hard for you, then GO HOME. Some things are bigger than politics. You just don’t get it.”

The backlash didn’t stop there. Conservative figures ranging from actor Rob Schneider to influencer Jake Paul—who was recently spotted at the games alongside Vice President JD Vance—echoed Donalds’ sentiments, arguing that the Olympic stage is not the place for political dissent.

However, Hess is not the only athlete speaking out. Fellow skier Chris Lillis expressed that he felt “heartbroken” over recent federal law enforcement actions, specifically regarding immigration enforcement. In response, Donalds’ supporters have pointed to the Congressman’s strong backing from Florida’s sheriffs and his commitment to law-and-order policies as he prepares for the 2026 gubernatorial primary.

While the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has issued a statement supporting the athletes’ right to personal expression and calling for an end to the “flood of vitriol” online, the debate shows no signs of cooling down. For Donalds, the moment serves as a clear reinforcement of his stance against the “soft-on-crime” and “anti-Constitution” agendas he claims are pushed by the radical left.

As the games continue in Italy, the conversation in Florida is increasingly focused on the intersection of sports, politics, and patriotism. With Donalds currently positioned as a frontrunner to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis, his high-profile defense of the flag has clearly resonated with a large segment of the electorate.
