Florida Congressman Discusses Budget Impasse and Reflects on Conservative Leader’s Impact in Radio Interview
Congressman Byron Donalds (R-FL) appeared on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show to address the ongoing budget negotiations, placing the blame for a potential government shutdown squarely on Senate Democrats and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Shutdown Battle: ‘Bending the Knee to the Radicals’
The Florida Republican was unequivocal in his assessment of the budget standoff, arguing that if the government were to shut down, the responsibility would lie with Senator Schumer’s efforts to appease the far-left wing of his party.
“I think if the government shuts down it’s because he [Chuck Schumer] is going to bend the knee to the radicals in the Democrat Party,” Donalds stated. He suggested that Schumer is reluctant to compromise after facing criticism from his party’s base when he previously worked with the prior Republican administration to keep the government open.
Donalds asserted that the American people rejected the “radical policies” of Democrats in the most recent national election, and that a shutdown would be an attempt by Schumer to force the current Republican administration to fund and implement those rejected policies.
“If Chuck Schumer wants to shutdown the government and have a Schumer shutdown, it’s simply because he wants the radical policies that the American people rejected to be funded by Donald Trump and executed by Donald Trump. And that is not going to happen, period – everybody knows it,” the Congressman concluded.
Honoring Charlie Kirk’s Lasting Legacy
Donalds also spoke emotionally about the recent death of Charlie Kirk, the founder of the influential conservative student organization Turning Point USA. He described the moment he learned of the tragedy, recounting how he “doubled over” after being shown the news.
The Congressman lauded Kirk as “one of one” and a figure who fundamentally altered the country’s political landscape for conservatism.
“Charlie Kirk has changed the political fabric in this country for conservatism,” Donalds said, highlighting Kirk’s vision of engaging young people in political debate based on conservative policy, Western Civilization, and Judeo-Christian values.
Donalds emphasized that Kirk’s work laid the foundation for the current strength of the conservative movement. “I don’t think we would be in the position we are right now, not just the Republican Party but the conservative movement, without Charlie Kirk. He’s going to be missed and he’s not going to be replaced.”
