Florida Rep. Luna Delivers $1.6 Million To Shield Treasure Island Sewers From Storms

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. – Treasure Island is set to receive a significant $1,600,000 federal investment this Tuesday to overhaul its aging wastewater infrastructure, a move aimed at preventing system failures and unsanitary backups during Florida’s heavy rain events.

Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna secured the funding to support a comprehensive lining project for the city’s wastewater collection system. The initiative targets the city’s network of more than 122,000 linear feet of pipes, most of which are made of vitrified clay and date back to the 1940s through the 1970s.

After decades of use, these pipes have developed cracks that allow groundwater and stormwater to seep in, a process known as infiltration.

Currently, infiltration levels in Treasure Island’s system sit between 45% and 65%. The influx of extra water puts immense strain on operations, especially during major storms, and increases the risk of overflows that threaten public health and safety.

By using the new federal funds to line the existing pipes rather than digging them up for a full replacement, the city expects to slash those infiltration levels down to just 10%. Local officials identified this lining method as the most effective way to modernize the system while keeping costs down.

Beyond the immediate fix, the project is expected to extend the lifespan of the city’s pipes by up to 50 years.

This long-term solution is designed to improve daily operations, reduce ongoing maintenance expenses, and ensure the system remains functional when the next heavy storm hits the coast.
