Florida Sen. Ashley Moody Clears Path For Massive Public Safety Overhaul

A sweeping package of six bills aimed at overhauling law enforcement support and public safety protocols moved through the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, timed to coincide with National Police Week. Senator Ashley Moody, who championed the legislative push, announced that the measures focus on everything from officer mental health to the resolution of decades-old cold cases.

The legislative bundle addresses several long-standing gaps in the American justice system. Among the most prominent is the Fighting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Act of 2025, which mandates the Department of Justice to build specific treatment frameworks for first responders dealing with acute stress and PTSD.

Another significant piece of the package, the Carla Walker Act, secures federal funding for forensic genetic genealogy, a tool increasingly used to crack unsolved homicides through DNA analysis.

“Our law enforcement officers step up every day to protect our communities, and we must have their backs,” Senator Moody said following the committee’s vote. “I’m proud to vote to advance these measures… to strengthen officer safety, expand mental health resources, support families of fallen officers, and provide law enforcement with additional tools to keep Americans safe.”

The bills also target administrative and operational hurdles. The Officer John Barnes and Chief Michael Ansbro Act aims to slash the wait times for the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits program, ensuring that injured officers or the families of the fallen receive financial support faster.

On the operational side, the Tribal Warrant Fairness Act was cleared to allow U.S. Marshals to assist Tribal police in apprehending violent fugitives and locating missing children.

The committee also advanced measures to tighten security within federal prisons by curbing contraband and to standardize leadership training for high-ranking police commanders.

This legislative movement follows a resolution cosponsored by Moody earlier this week that formally recognized the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families across the country.

With the committee’s approval, the six bills now head to the full Senate for further consideration.
