Senator Ashley Moody leads Miami roundtable, champions ‘Stop Maduro’ and ‘BOLIVAR’ Acts to combat cartels and drug trafficking.
U.S. Senator Ashley Moody met with law enforcement officials and Venezuelan American leaders at the Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office headquarters on Friday to address the escalating threat of narcoterrorism originating from Venezuela.
The meeting served as a platform for the Senator to promote key legislative measures she is cosponsoring aimed at disrupting the flow of deadly drugs into Florida communities.
Declaring War on Cartels
Senator Moody, the former Florida Attorney General, described narcoterrorism as “a war on our country, our kids, and law and order.” She condemned the cartels for “smuggl[ing] overwhelming amounts of deadly drugs into our country and sell[ing] this poison destabilizing our communities.”
She credited President Trump with taking “strong action against these terrorist organizations” and pledged her continued commitment to fighting drug trafficking. “As I’ve done when I was Florida’s Attorney General, and now as U.S. Senator, I will continue fighting to stop drug trafficking, remove violent criminals from our communities and save lives,” Moody stated.
Key Legislative Measures
Senator Moody highlighted two critical pieces of legislation she is cosponsoring to increase pressure on the Venezuelan regime and its criminal enterprises:
- The Stop Maduro Act: This bill authorizes the Department of State to offer a substantial reward—up to $100 million—for information directly leading to the arrest and conviction of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro for specified narcotics-related offenses.
- The BOLIVAR (Banning Operations and Leases with the Illegitimate Venezuelan Authoritarian Regime) Act: This measure prevents U.S. government agencies from entering into contracts with companies that are engaged in business with the Maduro regime. Moody asserts this act will reverse “Biden’s appeasement policies” and tighten economic pressure on the regime, building on previous efforts under the Trump administration.
Call for Stronger Action
During her tenure as Florida’s Attorney General, Moody collaborated closely with law enforcement to prosecute drug traffickers and gang members.
She also previously urged the Biden administration to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs), a move that would unlock additional tools for law enforcement and the U.S. government to combat these groups.
The legislative push comes as officials continue to grapple with the crisis of illicit drugs destabilizing communities across the state.
