Florida Senate President Ben Albritton remains in the hospital this week after doctors discovered a small blood clot in his lung. The 57-year-old Republican from Wauchula went to the emergency room at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning after he started feeling chest pain.

His office sent a memo to senators on Monday confirming the diagnosis. Despite the scare, the update described Albritton as being in “good spirits.”

He has stayed in touch with his staff through phone calls and emails while doctors keep him under observation for a few days. The memo noted that he and his wife, Missy, are grateful for the care he is receiving and asked for prayers.

Albritton is a citrus grower currently serving his second year as Senate president, one of the most powerful roles in Florida’s state government. He took over the position following the 2024 elections.

Legislative work will not stop during his recovery. The current session, which began earlier this month, is moving forward as planned. Albritton’s team expects him to be discharged and back at work later this week to finish out the session, which is scheduled to end on March 13.
