A 45-day multistate manhunt ended Thursday afternoon when a U.S. Marshals task force arrested 38-year-old murder suspect Isabelle Johnson at a residence near Cottondale, Florida. Johnson was wanted on an open murder charge in the death of 43-year-old Jason Coulthart, whose body was discovered buried in a shallow grave on June 25.
“We got her,” the Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced following the arrest. “Isabelle Johnson is in custody.”
The capture unfolded after the Walton County Sheriff’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit tracked information regarding Johnson’s location to an address off Peanut Road, just outside Cottondale in Jackson County. Jackson County Sheriff Donald Edenfield reported that deputies and task force members responded to the location and took Johnson into custody without incident.
Johnson was booked into the Jackson County Jail pending extradition to Walton County, with officials indicating she may face additional charges.
“It’s absolutely a good day,” said Walton County Chief Deputy Dustin Cosson. “It’s really important, again, just want to stress to the public. She’s here, she’s in custody. We can’t express the amount of appreciation for the work that’s been done.”
Cosson noted that the multi-agency investigation spanned Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, requiring “tons and tons of man hours,” more than 40 subpoenas, and upwards of 20 search warrants.
The case began when Coulthart was reported missing on May 24 after leaving the College Condominiums on East College Boulevard in Niceville. The Niceville Police Department later passed actionable leads to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, directing investigators to a property off Sunset Lane in Freeport. There, detectives executed a search warrant and uncovered Coulthart’s buried remains.
Throughout the search, authorities warned the public that Johnson was actively disguising herself and evading law enforcement across state lines. Detectives described her as a manipulator who used false identities—including aliases such as Harley, Jessica Elaine Bowman, Jessica Elaine Thrush, Jessica Elaine Thrash, Jessica Dowdy, and Denise—to secure rides, money, and shelter by fabricating stories of domestic abuse and hardship.
Prior to her capture, authorities had placed an $11,000 bounty on Johnson, backed by Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers and the Florida Sheriffs Association.
Five alleged accomplices have also been charged with accessory after the fact to a capital felony for assisting Johnson while on the run: Michael Ray White, Kathleen Morris, Bobbi Wagstaff, Martin Leaverton, and Sandra Leaverton. Authorities stated that additional arrests remain likely as the broader investigation proceeds.
While law enforcement moves forward with prosecution, Coulthart’s family continues to mourn a man known for his generosity and deep devotion to his family. A New Jersey native who spent years traveling between his home state and Florida—earning the local nickname “Jersey”—Coulthart was remembered as a devoted father to his 20-year-old son, a beloved brother to his sibling Timothy, and an avid sports fan who spent his summers at his family’s long-held Lake Ontario cottage.
“He’d give you the shirt off his back,” his parents, Ken and Sandy Coulthart, said, recounting how Jason frequently stepped in to purchase groceries or restore power for neighbors facing hard times.
Following the discovery of his death, Coulthart’s parents voiced the deep pain left in the wake of the crime: “How could you possibly do this to our child? How could you do this to his son? How could you take his father away without a second thought?”
Walton County officials stated that further operational details regarding the arrest remain restricted due to the active nature of the ongoing criminal investigation.
