State troopers are maintaining a close watch on a stretch of Interstate 75 in Collier County today as smoke from nearby wildfires continues to drift across the highway. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Wednesday that visibility remains a primary concern for the area known as Alligator Alley, specifically between mile markers 65 and 85.

While the interstate remains open in both directions, officials warn that conditions can shift rapidly with wind and fire activity.

Troopers plan to monitor the corridor throughout the night to ensure the safety of motorists. Because smoke can settle heavily over the pavement during the cooler overnight and early morning hours, the FHP is asking everyone behind the wheel to stay alert and strictly follow safety protocols.

To navigate the haze safely, experts recommend keeping speeds low and resisting the urge to use high-beam headlights.

While high beams are usually helpful in the dark, they actually reflect off smoke and fog, making it harder to see the road ahead. Drivers should instead stick to low beams to help others spot their vehicle without causing blinding glare.

Safety officials also suggest minimizing distractions inside the car. Turning off the radio and putting away mobile phones allows drivers to focus entirely on the changing environment.

If visibility becomes too poor to continue, the FHP advises against stopping on the shoulder of the highway. Instead, drivers should look for an exit or pull as far off the roadway as possible before turning on hazard lights. Using the white lines on the right side of the road as a guide can also help motorists stay in their lanes when the center lines become obscured.

For now, the best advice for those heading through Collier County is patience.

Avoiding unnecessary lane changes and keeping a significant distance from the car in front can prevent chain-reaction accidents in unpredictable conditions. The Highway Patrol will provide further updates if visibility drops to a level that requires road closures.
