The Florida Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on October 8th to address a long-standing dispute over a 2021 settlement that resulted in increased base electric rates for Florida Power & Light customers.
The appeal, filed by Florida Rising, the Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida, and the League of United Latin American Citizens of Florida, challenges the Florida Public Service Commission’s approval of the settlement.

The four-year settlement, reached between FPL, the state Office of Public Counsel (representing consumers), and other parties, led to substantial rate increases in 2022 and 2023. It also allows for future increases to fund solar energy projects.
The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case follows an unusual move last year when it sent the matter back to the commission, demanding further justification for the settlement’s alignment with the public interest and its fairness in terms of rates.
The commission responded with a more detailed order in March, which prompted the opponents to appeal again.
