Residents of the quiet Polo Park West community in Davenport are reeling after the brutal murder of a beloved neighbor, a crime that Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described as “vicious and violent.”

John Torneo, a 67-year-old retired nurse known for his generosity, was found dead in his home on Sunday. Authorities have charged his former roommate, 19-year-old Julian Trevino, with first-degree murder, armed burglary, and robbery.

According to investigators, the tragedy stems from an act of kindness gone wrong. Torneo, who had a 30-year career caring for others, had allowed Trevino to move into his home in September after the teen needed a place to stay. However, tensions rose when Trevino reportedly failed to contribute to household expenses. Torneo asked him to leave last Wednesday.

Sheriff Judd stated that Trevino returned to the home early Sunday morning, allegedly breaking in through a bathroom window and hiding in a closet. When Torneo awoke and confronted the intruder, the situation turned deadly. Police say Trevino shoved the retiree onto a bed before retrieving a butcher knife from the kitchen.

The ensuing attack was described in graphic detail during a Tuesday press conference.

Trevino allegedly stabbed Torneo repeatedly and beat him with a wine bottle to ensure he was dead. The suspect then reportedly stole the victim’s credit cards and car, leaving the body to be discovered by a concerned friend later that afternoon.

Detectives caught up with Trevino on Monday. He was spotted driving Torneo’s vehicle and, after a brief pursuit that ended with him crashing into a ditch, he fled on foot before being captured.

During questioning, Trevino reportedly confessed to the crime. Sheriff Judd noted the suspect’s lack of criminal history but emphasized the callous nature of the act. “Sometimes when you’re nice to evil people, they kill you,” Judd said, adding that the investigation was straightforward due to the evidence left behind. “Helen Keller could have followed the leads that this guy left.”

Torneo is remembered by neighbors as a “superhuman being” who was always willing to help those down on their luck—a trait that, in a tragic twist, may have led to his untimely death.
